Matthew 28:20
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
What an exceedingly blessed promise this is! What a comforting statement, that consoles our minds and puts our hearts at rest and at ease. The Lord has commanded us to do many things. But never has He commanded us to do something when His presence would not go with us. Did He not tell Moses, “My presence shall go with you”? And to Joshua, “I am with thee withersoever thou goest”? And to Paul, “I am with thee in this city”? Yes! He promised it over and over again. And here He promises this to His own disciples, who journeyed with Him all the while He lived on this earth. And this is said in conjunction with a great commission he was imparting to them. They would need His presence to go with them as they continued His work in His absence.
What command are the disciples given? They are commissioned to go and teach all nations. Does that not sound like a daunting task? Certainly it is no small task. The whole world must be reached for Christ! All nations! Without exception! And they are to be brought out of darkness into His marvelous light! They are to be transitioned from the power of Satan unto God! And as they are brought to this faith in Christ, they are to be baptized. As a picture of their faith in Christ, and of their immersion into Christ, they are to be baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Now some people may be killed for making a public confession. Some may be persecuted for being saved and baptized. This is the real risk. And it is the risk that His disciples were facing. So to encourage them in their journey, and to send them among the wolves with confidence, He assured them, “I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” What a promise we have! They were further told to teach their converts whatsoever the Lord had commanded them. This step of discipleship may be met by hardship and opposition from the world. But, praise God, we have no need to worry! For He is with us always!
Now, my friend, I know not what all is upon your plate this day to be accomplished. I know not what all the Lord has commanded you to do for Him. I know not what person may be placed along your path, or what wandering sinner you may encounter. But, no doubt, there is someone you must introduce to the Savior. He is with you! No need to be fearful! Is there a task you are to perform this day? Is it outside of the comfort in which you normally live? Does it seem unachievable, unattainable, and out of your reach? Does it seem hard, difficult, or scary? He is with you! He is there to help you to obey His every command. He has not left us comfortless! He will come to us! He is with us alway, even unto the end of the world! Amen!
“Dear Lord, we praise you for this most precious promise. We lean on you today, trusting that your presence will be with us every moment. Whatever we are called upon to do, we are able to do with your aid. For you are truly with us! We thank you for this! Help us to remember it every moment throughout this day. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
