Deuteronomy 33:27
The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.
In this descriptive and somewhat inscrutable passage we find the blessings of Moses conveyed onto the tribes of Israel. A separate and distinct blessing is pronounced upon each tribe, some with more blessings being given than others. Each tribe is shown to have a special interest in the eyes of God. And what a great lesson we learn here—of the intricate and specific care of the Lord for all of His children! Asher is the last one given a blessing, and then there are general blessings spelled out for all of Israel. And my contention here today is, that the general blessings listed here are also fully available, accessible, and applicable to all of God’s children. For the Lord says that our feet shall be iron and brass; and as our days, so shall our strength be! What a promise! That the Lord shall sustain us, and we shall never have more days than our strength allows! He will keep us strong all the days of our lives-as iron and brass! And, there is none like unto the God of Jeshurun! The God of Israel is the God of all His people! The God of Jacob is our God! The God of the saints of old is the God of you and me. Let us never forget this. We are the people saved by the Lord! We take and claim every one of these blessings as our own! For this is all for our learning, the we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.
Now, maybe, the greatest of all these blessings is this: that the eternal God is our refuge! And underneath are the everlasting arms! What greater comfort do we have? What greater source of strength is there in all the universe? The everlasting arms! Other arms may fail. We know that the arm of flesh will fail us. We know that the arm of man is impotent and weak. We know that our own arm of strength is apt and prone to failure and listlessness. But what of the everlasting arms! Are we leaning on these arms? For you see, the everlasting arms are supporting arms. They will bolster us and hold us up when we have little or no strength. They are guiding arms, for they lead us through life as the strong arm of a Father would direct a little child. They are embracing arms, for they love us, comfort us, and console us in times of grief, discouragement, failure, and loss. “His right hand doth embrace me,” says the Shulamite! These are arms of love. And these arms are everlasting arms! For they are always available! There is never a day in which you may not lean on the everlasting arms! There is never a moment in which they cannot be found. Underneath are the everlasting arms! They are there for you to fall back on and recline your weary soul. They are for you to rest and repose your tired head on the infinite strength of His arms. They will always be there in this life, and we will continue to be embraced by them in that life which is to come. For they are everlasting arms! Lean on His arms today! Dear one, cradle your head on His strength, and settle your heart in the embrace of His powerful and never failing arms. For underneath are His everlasting arms.
“Father, help us this day to lean ourselves fully and completely on Thee and Thy strength. We thank you that your everlasting arms are ready to receive and support us. They are there to guide us, and quick to embrace us. May we receive these most wonderful blessings today by leaning on your everlasting arms. And we pray these things in Jesus’ name, Amen.”
