John 7:38
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
What a promise this is! What a divine vow! A glorious attestation by Christ Himself! He that believeth on me! This is not limited to a select few, only to those that believe on Him. And what a wondrous truth it is that He, through the Holy Spirit of God, will dwell in us, and flow through us! The following verse says, “(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified).” We have received the Holy Spirit if we have believed on Him. And therefore this promise is true. Oh, may there be nothing inhibiting those rivers of living water today! May there be nothing stemming the flow of the Holy Spirit! May there be nothing impeding, nothing hindering the flow of God’s Spirit!
I fear, lest by any means, many Christians have missed this great blessing. It is not that God has failed on His promise, but alas, Christians have failed Him! For we have not looked for this clean source of refreshing water. We have looked for the lesser and the nether springs. We have gone to the cisterns, broken cisterns that can hold no water. May God forgive us for this! Have we forsaken the fountain of living waters? May God forgive us for this great sin. God has given us this well of living waters through His Spirit. If we are not enjoying it, not imbibing its waters, not consuming its pure joy and refreshment, it is because we have turned away from it to choose other springs. There are no springs like it! No river in the world so clear and life-giving! No source of strength and purity beside it! Nothing compares! We have sought to find equivalent springs, but in so doing, we have cheated our souls, and robbed our own beings. We have given up our happiness for a bag with holes. We have forsaken that which is sustaining for that which satisfieth not. See Isaiah 55:1-2.
Dear friend, where are you going for satisfaction today? Where is your source of strength? Where do you find sustenance, enjoyment, and refreshment? Is it through the Spirit of God? Is it through His grace and His presence? Go to Him today! Refuse the broken cisterns! Do not labor for that which doesn’t satisfy. Do not weary yourself to find something that will leave you dry, thirsty, and dissatisfied. But go to the well of living waters! Find the rivers of living waters! For they are all in Christ. The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, has come, and has provided us these waters. Out of your belly may flow rivers of living waters, and they spring up into everlasting life! See also John 4:13-14. Drink from the living water today!
“Dear Father, we thank you that you have provided for us rivers of living water. And you have promised us that if we take of that water, we shall never thirst again! Help us not to turn to lesser things, and to waters that will never fully satisfy, but let us satiate our souls with the heavenly springs, with the rivers of living water. Thank you for providing this glorious source of spiritual life that comes from your blessed Holy Spirit. Let us be satisfied with Him today! In Jesus’ wonderful name we pray, Amen.”
