Psalm 19:14

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

This prayer I have adopted for myself. It has become my own prayer. Will you fervently pray this same prayer today? Meditation of the heart is done by all of us. We think on many things. We ruminate on ideas, plans, and possibilities. We ponder over hopes and dreams; we consider important matters. However, what is the meditation that is pleasing to the Lord? Have you meditated on Him this day? On His greatness? On His love? On His mercy? On His patience and lovingkindness? How we begin our day will set the trajectory of our thoughts for that day. Leave off the worries and cares! Leave off the wondering and wishing! Leave off the troubles and strife! And let us turn our minds to Him! Thinking of the Lord first will ensure that we will obey Him first. When we are meditating on Him, we will seek to please Him. When we are mediating on the problems we have faced, our day will be spent pleasing ourselves.

But what should we think on in the mornings? Whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. See Philippians 4:8. Thinking on these things will remove contrary things from our minds. We will not be thinking of things that are hypothetical, worrisome, impure, or unchristian, because we have filled our mind with that which pleases the Lord. It will be acceptable in His sight! For, “The thought of foolishness is sin” (Proverbs 24:9). Ask the Lord to cleanse your mind this morning! Ask Him to know your heart and try you and know your thoughts, and see if there be any wicked way in you. And ask Him to lead you in the way everlasting!

And what of our words today? Are the words of my mouth acceptable in His sight? We must let no corrupt communication proceed out of our mouths, but only that which is good to the use of edifying. We are to minister grace unto the hearers! For by our words we shall be justified, and by our words we shall be condemned. There is nothing more powerful than words. Death and life are in the power of the tongue! They that love it shall, no doubt, eat the fruits thereof. May we pray with the psalmist, “Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.” For we cannot do this ourselves. The tongue can no man tame! How we need the Lord! How we need His enabling! How we need His cleansing this day! O, may the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in the sight of the Lord, for He is my strength and my Redeemer!

“Heavenly Father, we are weak and powerless without Thee. But our desire is toward Thee! We long for clean hands and a pure heart. We long for a holy mind. Help us this day! Hear our prayers! And may all that we say and all that we mediate on this day be pleasing in Thy sight. For Thou art our only strength in all things, and Thou art our blessed Redeemer! We pray these things in the name of Christ Jesus our Savior and Redeemer, Amen.”

The devotional today is a great reminder of the need to fill our minds with pure thoughts and not with worldly thoughts.

I was born and raised in a Lutheran Church. Before the sermon, the minister always prayed the prayer you mentioned at the beginning of this devotion. Thank you for sharing.
