Luke 8:24
And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.
This is a familiar story told in the Gospel records of Jesus and the disciples on the Sea of Galilee, as they were heading to the country of the Gadarenes. I will not give all the details now. You may read the story in its entirety if you desire to get the full effect. But the one detail we would like to mediate on this morning will be the state of things mentally and physically that Jesus brought to the situation. They were in jeopardy! The water was filling up the ship! They thought they would perish! “Master, master,” they said, “we perish!” And so would you and I respond to such a situation as this. Jesus was asleep in the ship, and they thought that He had forgotten about them. But He hadn’t, He only wanted them to learn that His presence could bring peace.
When Jesus arose, He rebuked the winds and the sea, and all the raging and tumbling and crashing ceased in that moment. And here, we are told, there was a calm. A calm! A great calm, Matthew andMark tell us. When the Master spoke, all things troubled became a placid sea of calmness and serenity. And He asked them, “Where is your faith?” They had lost faith because their eyes were on the jeopardizing circumstances rather than on the Master of the sea. Here is the principle that we need to meditate on today: our faith is inseparable to our calmness. Do you need calmness? Have faith! Are you troubled? Look to the Master! Believe in Him, wait on Him, trust in Him, and rely on His wisdom. You shall find peace sublime in Him as you leave your cares with Him. He shall calm down all the worries and cares and anxieties that plague your heart. He is there, and should be the source of all peace. Be calm in Thy soul today!
“Father, may we find peace and calmness in Christ today. He is the fountain of all peace. He is the One that calms the stormy wind and tempest. May we seek calmness in Him, and find a new peace in the Lord that passes all understanding. And we give all this to Thee. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
