Matthew 13:16

But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

When Jesus spoke to the Pharisees, He did not speak in blunt truths or in obvious principles. He did not tell them plainly. He, instead, spoke in parables; He uttered dark sayings, knowing that it would be hidden from their minds. Their hearts were hardened. They had, as Isaiah said, hearts that were waxed gross. Their eyes they had closed, the ears they had stopped, and their hearts would not understand. Jesus knew their hearts. So, when His disciples asked Him why He spoke in parables, He explained that it was not given to the people to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but, He said, unto you it is given! It is given to you to know the dark sayings and the mysterious truths! It is for you to know the inscrutable and abstruse sayings of old. Those things which the prophets hoped to know, and the angels desire to look into are open for your view! Blessed are your eyes!

“Blessed are your eyes,” the Lord says, “for they see!” And “your ears, for they hear!” Many prophets and righteous men have desired to see these things, and have not seen them. They wished to hear these things, and never heard them. What privilege! What honor! What an incommensurable opportunity to see these things and hear these things! And may I remind all my readers today—we see and hear the same things the apostles did. Just as they were allowed of God to know the mysteries of the Kingdom, so are we! We have entered into the same joy. We have been invited into the inner room, the Holy of Holies, as it were, to see things heretofore unseen, and to hear things which it was not lawful for a man to utter. This, my friend, is our privilege, and today we ought to thank the Lord that our eyes are open and our ears are able to hear.

How do we know these things? The Lord has endowed each of us with His blessed Holy Spirit, who reveals the deep things of God. Therefore, we can share these truths with others who do not know. Think of those who don’t know! Think of those whose hearts are hardened, but which God can soften! Think of the many who, if told the truths of God’s Kingdom, may believe. Let us utilize the wonderful and inexhaustible store of truth and knowledge that can be found in God’s Word, and reveal it to others. It is not closed from others. It is an open secret! Thank the Lord for what you have, and ask Him to reveal His Son in you and through You.

“Father, we praise You this day that we have eyes to see and ears to hear. This we do not take for granted, but ask that You would continue to show Your kindness and mercy by opening our eyes and hearts more and more to the wonder and truth of Your Word. It is given to us to know these things! Show us who we can share this with, even now, that others may come onto this pearl of great price, and sell all they have to buy it. And we shall praise You for how You shall use us. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
