Malachi 3:6
For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
What a marvelously comforting truth this is! What a statement of stupendous proportions! What a declaration like none other—a pronouncement of perpetual and everlasting import. Its latitude is universal and its impact is upon all of creation. “I change not!” says the Lord! For I am the Lord! He is the Lord! And because He is the Lord, He does not change. That is part and parcel of His being. That is the very nature of God, the character and attribute of God that governs all else. He never has, never can, and never will change. “Jesus Christ,” the writer of Hebrews declares, “the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” The truth that He never changes shall never change!
Now, my dear friends, you are a changing being. In fact, we live in the midst of change. Time is the very measurement of change. It is inexorably moving on. Every event, every situation, and every mechanism on earth is constantly in flux and on the move. Our minds never stay static or in one place for more than a fraction of a second. And the world! Oh, the fashion of it passeth away! All the lust thereof is of a completely transient nature. It comes and it goes. It appears and it disappears. It is one thing, and then it’s another. Oh, my friend, change is inevitable and invasive and pervasive. It invades every aspect and arena of our existence. And it is not always a negative thing. It can often be the greatest thing that ever happened to you. Imagine your conversion! Imagine the day Christ changed your life! Imagine the transition from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God! Imagine all that God has done to change you into His image from glory to glory and to make all things new! These are wonderful changes!
But sometimes, the constant switching and shifting and splashing of changes can be disheartening and discouraging. Sometimes good things are phased out, and wonderful people are no longer with us. This is not a change that we savor or enjoy. But let me bring this final encouragement to you. There is One who does not and never shall change. He is not subject to the constant movement and morphing of this world. He is our God, and He is our Savior, and He is our Friend. Christ never changes! And one day, when we are with Him forever in Heaven, we shall be unchangeable, for this corruptible shall have put on incorruption and this mortal shall have put on immortality. We shall never be subject to change again! Never! And please be uplifted this morning in thinking that although your circumstances change, He is constant. What He promised, He shall perform. What He said yesterday, He is still saying today. He has not changed His mind. He remains the same and His years shall not fail. Rest your weary head this day on this most wonderful truth—that the Lord changes not!
“Dear Lord, we praise You that in the midst of all the change about us and in us, we have an unchangeable and unmovable God. May our stability and our constancy come from Him. And may we not allow the changes that we see bewilder us and bewitch us and beguile us of the peace that we should have in our never-changing God. And in all the changes we experience, may we be reminded that whether they be very good, or whether they be sad changes, they are all temporary; and they lead us to that place where we will know no change. And we look forward to that day, trusting You with the days You have given us here. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
