Psalm 136:1

O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

There are numerous and infinite reasons for which we may thank the Lord. There is an unending and inexhaustible store of reasons for which we should give thanks. We may speak of the food that He gives to all flesh; we may speak of His earnest and special care for all creation; we may deliberate over the tremendous and innumerable blessings that have been loaded upon us all. All these things and many besides would cause great praise and thanksgiving. But the single purpose that is before us today is that His mercy endureth forever. It endureth forever! This truly is an unchanging attribute of God’s almighty character. He is a God of mercy. He always has been and always will be. The mercy that He has bestowed upon us is everlasting.

His mercy! Let us consider how great the mercy is that He has freely given. “He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.” See Psalm 103:10-11. There is no limit to it! That is mercy—that He does not give us what we deserve. He has not given us an equal justice for our sins. His mercy has rejoiced against judgment, and He has saved us by His grace. We have been saved! We have been redeemed! We have been rescued by His everlasting mercy. Salvation has become ours, and He has continued to show mercy every day.

Dear friends, do you see all the mercy that He offers you so freely each day? His mercies are new every morning. Great is Thy faithfulness! Every day, as we fail Him, sadly fail Him, He pardons and forgives us. Let us not forget to praise Him continually for this. For if we were rewarded according to our sins and iniquities, we would be condemned and lost, but He has chosen to unceasingly shower us with mercy. It certainly endures for ever towards those that fear Him. Thank God for His mercy! Lean upon it and draw from it today. Receive all the forgiveness that He freely offers, and rejoice in it. And may those dear ones that have never discovered His mercy find in Him this mercy that endures forever.

“Dear Father, we thank you for the great mercy of Christ that we richly enjoy each day. And we praise you for the new mercies that we are continually receiving and constantly imbibing. Thank you that there is never a time that we cannot find your mercy, but it is always freely available to us. Let us greatly rejoice in Thee and Thy mercy this day. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
