Zechariah 12:10

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced…

The picture painted here is a dual picture. For we see this prophecy fulfilled in John 19, when the soldiers pierced His side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. Every last drop of blood was shed, and therefore at the last the only thing left was water. Christ endured all for us, and was depleted and emptied of every ounce of blood in His physical body. And Zechariah is prophesying of this. But, as I say, there is a dual meaning. For this whole passage is about the second coming of Christ, when He will return to this earth and fight against all nations that fought against Israel. In that day, He will come to save His own—His own who received Him not. He will come to save them. But when He comes this second time, it will not be in the manner of the first coming. In the first, they could not recognize Him; He was concealed from their view. They missed Him! But they shall not miss Him in His second coming. Indeed, no one shall miss Him! For as the lightning cometh out of the east and shineth even unto the west, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. And all the tribes of the earth shall mourn. And they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory! But here, we are dealing with Israel. They shall look on me whom they have pierced.

They shall look on Him! They shall look with remorse and regret. They shall recognize that they missed their Messiah. They shall look on Him with awe and wonder. And so shall it be for all the world. Every person who rejected Him; every person who did not heed the gentle invitation of Christ; every person who gave up that opportunity vouchsafed to them to come to the Savior. They shall look on Him! Every one shall see Him! And we also shall behold Him! We shall look on the face of our Redeemer! Have you thought on this? Do you love His appearing? For He shall appear! And He may appear very soon. We must be watching and we must be waiting, that we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before Him at His coming. Are you ready? Are you prepared? Do not let that day overtake you as a thief. Be prepared to see your Savior. For you shall look on Him, and I shall look on Him! What a great day!

“Father, thank you for the glorious promise that we shall see the King someday. And, oh Lord, help us to be ready for that day when we shall behold your thorn shadowed face. Our sin is what crucified you. All of us put you on the cross. In that sense, we have all pierced you. Our iniquities have pierced your heart. But you have forgiven and redeemed us. Therefore, let us not have our eyes on the earthly things about us, but may we live prepared for you to come. And we pray that Thou wouldst find faith on the earth in each of us. And these things we pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.”
