Revelation 21:4
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
This world in which we now live is full of every one of the things found in this verse. Death is ubiquitous; sorrow infects every person and every part of this planet; crying is heard often; pain is prevalent and present in almost every person, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. All of these things are inevitable and inescapable while we live on this earth. They cause grief, they cause heartache, they cause confusion, hurt, and anger. We don’t understand why some have to endure these things constantly, seemingly with no remission or respite. But dear one, always keep the great truth of this verse in your mind—that all these things are truly temporal. They are transient. They only last as long as the earth remaineth. They shall soon pass away, and then shall begin that eternal day. What a promise! What a hope! And don’t ever think that you will miss anything on this earth. The memory of those things shall be forgotten and will be enveloped and overwhelmed in the beauty and glory of that endless day.
The former things are passed away! The pain will be gone! The sorrow will be removed! You will never shed a sad tear again! The things we cannot comprehend or understand here shall disappear and fade away in the light of His glorious face. For He shall make all things new! Everything shall be converted from a sinful, corrupt, imperfect state to a sinless, holy, and perfect state. The thought of anything else will be forever banished. All shall be wonderful. The very city in which we will dwell shall be pure gold, like unto clear glass. We shall live in a city of jasper and walk on streets of gold. This is the habitation of saints. Hold on my friend! The former things shall soon be passed away!
“Father, we thank you for this most wonderful and amazing promise. Let us not keep our eyes on the things of this earth, but may we center them on the things above. Let our affections not be on things on this earth, for it shall all pass away. May our treasure be in Heaven, because then our heart shall also be there. Help us, Lord, to encourage and comfort and strengthen ourselves and our faith through the remembrance of this beautiful and hopeful future that awaits us all that are saints. And we praise you that one day all the things current shall be former, and those former things shall be passed away. We praise you for all this. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
