2 Corinthians 10:17
But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
The inveterate tendency of every person living is to boast of their accomplishments, to take the credit themselves, and to compare themselves with others. Now these come in varying degrees. The more we are yielded to the Spirit of God, the less we will yield to these tendencies and dispositions. But we must learn not to boast of things without our measure, the apostle says. There are things God has not given to us that He has given to others. That should be acceptable and pleasing to us. We should not covet and envy that which is not ours, but praise God for the rule that He has distributed to us. We should not compare our lives with the lives of other believers, or of anyone else. Our lives are to be lived within the sphere of what God has vouchsafed to our care. That should be enough, and we ought to be content with it. In time, the Lord will allow us to enlarge and expand to the regions beyond. But, no doubt, the Lord will not allow us to breach the boundaries of our current calling until we have been faithful in that with which we have been entrusted.
Do not compare with others! Do not seek to commend yourself. For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth. This means that if the Lord’s hand is on our lives, He alone will make that evident. We will have no need to promote ourselves or honor ourselves. Promotion does not come from the east or the west of the south. It always comes from the Lord. So let us not glory in ourselves. For there is nothing that we have that we did not receive, and further, without Him we can do nothing. Indeed, we are nothing without the Lord. And He has given us every ability, talent, and calling that is upon our lives. Let us remain humble. Let us possess the meekness and gentleness of Christ. It is all of Him, and through Him, and to Him.
Let him glory in the Lord! Let us not glory in ourselves, our accomplishments, our abilities, or our calling. Let us only glory in the One who has bestowed it on us! Let us glory in our Savior! Let us give Him the glory! For He alone is worthy. In the eternal home, we shall all cast our crowns at His feet and say, “Thou art worthy.” Therefore, let us begin the practice at once, directing all of our praise to the One without whom none of us would have breath. He that glorieth (Oh, may the Lord help us!), let him glory in the Lord!
“Heavenly Father, we know that all things are of Thee. Without Thee, our life would be vapid, hopeless, meaningless. But in Thee we have all. In Thee we have purpose and meaning. Oh Lord, help us never to boast of who we are or what we have done, for none of these things could be achieved any other way than by your strength and enablement. We are nothing. You are everything. We glory in you, and we praise you, and we glorify you! In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
