2 Corinthians 7:13
Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all.
There are times in which nothing can encourage a person like the fellowship and comfort of the presence of God’s people. We know that God comforteth those that are cast down, and therefore is the primary and constant source of our peace and comfort. But God has made it so that His own people would provide the tangible, immediate, much needed comfort that only Christians can provide. The fellowship of God’s people will refresh your spirit! As it did for Titus, it will lift up the drooping countenance, and will bolster the weakened faith. It will provide renewed energy for the weary, and give new joy to a hurting heart. This is what the comfort of other Christians can do. Paul said, “We were comforted in your comfort.”
Comforted in your comfort! If we are comforted, we should comfort others who are in any trouble. If we have received the comfort of God, we should be generous and liberal with that comfort that we may refresh the spirits of others. That is the purpose of the refreshment that we receive, that we may give what we have received. Have you someone that you may comfort today? There are many who are fallen into discouragement and disillusionment. They have little hope, and need the comfort of a loving Christian to get them to the crest of their hill. They need the refreshment of another brother or sister to keep them on their way. They need no complaining! They need not discouraging words, troubled thoughts, or needless chatter. But they do need the comfort that God has given you.
Let us all think, beloved, how can we encourage and refresh and comfort someone today? Speaking of others’ faults does not encourage. Talking of the woes and ills of life may only exacerbate their discouragement. They need to be uplifted, helped, and consoled. Let us ask the Lord to give us the gift of comfort today, that we may carry that same comfort to the soul who needs it most.
“Dear Father, we thank you for the comfort that you provide us each day. We thank you for the refreshment and encouragement that you continue to bless us with moment by moment. And help us, Lord, to happily and cheerily turn our eyes from ourselves, and hunt down the precious life that we can bless and refresh. Use us this day for your glory! In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
