1 Corinthians 10:31
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
There is one test, one determining factor which should govern every action, every word, and every thought. We must ask, does this glorify God? If it can be done to God’s glory, it can be done right. If it cannot be done in His name and for His honor, than it is, no doubt, a sin. This will easily differentiate between right and wrong, between permissible and prohibited, between that which is wise and that which is unwise. Can I do this to the glory of God? I am to give none offense in anything. Therefore, if others are offended by my actions, I cannot glorify God with those things. If something is of the world and the devil, I cannot please Christ with that. I cannot commune with Christ and love the world. This passage has taught us that the two are utterly incompatible and disagreeable. I cannot walk into an idol’s temple and glorify God. But it is not my responsibility whether the same is true of another person. However, I must not, 1 Corinthians has told us, do anything that may hurt the conscience of another, or wound a brother or sister in Christ. This does not glorify God!
Dear friends, in all that we do today, and in all that we say; even in all our thoughts we must pass this great litmus test. Does it glorify God? Paul, in the epistle to the Colossians says, “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” In the name of the Lord Jesus! Do everything in His name! There are many things I cannot do in His name. I cannot speak ill of others in His name. I cannot use vulgarities and profanities in His name. I cannot harbor strife and envy in His name. I cannot lust over that which is not mine in His name. I cannot fill my mind, heart, and soul with the devil’s detestable refuse, and still claim to do all things in His name. I must be separate, I must be consecrated, I must not be divided and mixed in my allegiance. For it is a great privilege to walk and breathe and speak and live in His name. Do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, and whatsoever you do, do it all to the glory of God!
“Father, we thank you that things have been simplified for us that we may know how we are to live. It is easy to determine if something is pleasing to the Lord. Our own consciences and our moral compasses that have been installed from birth help us to know right and wrong. But further, for those things which are more ambiguous, we can tell what is right by asking whether it would bring glory to Thy holy name. May this be our one goal, and it will keep us from all sin. Whether we are eating, or drinking, or walking, or working, or are anywhere in this world, may we seek to do only those things which glorify God. In the name of Jesus Christ our Savior we pray, Amen.”
