1 Corinthians 1:26

For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called.

Oh, the glorious calling that God has given us! He has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. He has called us with a holy calling, a high calling, a blessed calling. There could be nothing greater, higher, or more felicitous than this calling. And it is our calling. We see our calling, brethren!

Now this calling has not been given according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. We have not earned it, deserved it, or acquired it. We have but received it. And it has been received by our Lord. It is irrespective, independent, and regardless of our effort to gain it. It has been given! And the beauty is, that it is not given to the wise of this world, the mighty of this world, or the noble of this world, or at least, that is not normally how the Lord does it. For He must receive all glory. No flesh shall glory in His presence. And how we praise God for this wonderful truth, because, my dear friend, I am not wise in this world; I am not a mighty man by the world’s standard of measurement; I am not noble in their eyes. But no matter! For the Lord considers not such things! He calls whom He will. He will call the foolish things of this world, the weak things of this world, and the things which are nothing, that He may bring to nothing the things that seem to be something. And my friend, I certainly am nothing. But the Lord by His wonderful grace can call me for His glorious and wonderful will, that I may be an instrument in His hand and for His glory—that, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

So, to the reader today, thank God that He has called you from nothing. Thank God that He uses the foolish of this world for His purposes. And how this should bring us to humility! For none of us are anything! We are nothing, and are therefore on an even plane. Why do we judge others’ value and place in His will as if we may look down upon them? That is foolishness! They that compare themselves with others, the Lord says, are not wise! Every man standeth or falleth to His own master. Yea, God is able to make him stand! Despise not others, for such an attitude is despised by God. Be not highminded, but fear! God may take thee away. Be humble, for you are no more than your neighbor, and be grateful that not many noble are called; for it is only by this criterion that thou hast been chosen.

“Dear Father, we thank you and praise your holy name, that you have called those who are despised, hated, small, weak, and insignificant, that they may be used for your magnificent purposes. We thank Thee that Thou didst condescend to our humble estate. And please, dear Lord, help us to remain in that humble and contrite state, knowing that we are nothing. For if we were to think we were something, we would be deceiving ourselves. Thank you for using us for your everlasting glory. We praise and thank you for this. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
