Galatians 3:6
Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
The one attribute and characteristic of Abraham that we all know of is his faith. He is called “faithful Abraham,” and “they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.” He believed God! God had promised him a son, and he believed God! God had promised him a land, and he believed God! He promised him a seed, and he believed God! His faith was accounted to him for righteousness! This is the greatest trait of all—the quality of having faith in God. For you see, here we are clearly told, “the just shall live by faith.”
Now this explanatory passage helps us to understand the truth of the gospel, that we are not justified by the law. For no one can be justified by the works of the law, but we are justified only by the faith of Christ. How did you come to salvation? Was it not through faith in Jesus Christ? And if you came to God through faith in Christ, this should be the same quality by which we live every subsequent day in our lives. Abraham did not only believe unto righteousness, but it was a way of life for him. You and I have believed in Christ unto righteousness—our faith is counted for righteousness, as it was with Abraham. But that faith should only grow bigger and larger and greater and more magnificently strong over the years of our pilgrimage.
Do you believe God? Do you believe Him now more than you believed Him when you came to your first faith? It should only be the first faith, and we should now have progressed to a much deeper faith. May we cry out with the disciples, “Lord, increase our faith!” Every circumstance of life, every divine intervention, every show of His power, every demonstration of His presence should be the impetus of a new and stronger faith. Our lives should be lived by faith and we should die in faith. It is a faith life! Abraham believed God! Believe Him today, and ask Him to help you to believe Him for greater things!
“Father, we thank you for the powerful lesson we learn from the life of faithful Abraham. And we pray that Thou wouldst strengthen and grow our faith with each passing day. As Abraham began by faith, and continued by faith, and died in faith, may we truly do the same. May our faith be greatly increased that our lives may be lived daily in and through the faith of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. And we shall trust Thee for this. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
