Luke 18:27
And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.
Every one of us know full well and understand without any confusion the saying that certain things are impossible with men. We cannot do all things. In fact, there are more things that we cannot do than things that we can do! We are bound by the feeble strength of mankind. We are confined, boxed in, bounded and strictly fenced in by our own inabilities and weaknesses. Here we see that a man came to Jesus asking about eternal life. This man thought that eternal life can be earned by doing things. Jesus quickly showed the folly of such an assumption. For this man may have kept most of the Ten Commandments, but when it came to giving all his goods to the poor, he resisted. He was selfish! Unwilling to sell and distribute to the poor. Jesus showed him that he was not as righteous as he thought he was. Did he want not only eternal life, but also treasure in Heaven? He must then be willing to give up riches and comforts here, that he may enjoy great riches and rewards yonder in glory. But the man walked away with sunken face and dejected countenance. He was disappointed, disillusioned, dismayed! I must give up my riches? I must then follow Christ? He was unhappy with the demand placed upon him. And then Jesus drew the analogy of a rich man entering Heaven, and explained that it was as unlikely as a camel passing through the tiny eye of a needle. Of course, this is impossible! And the people standing about quickly stated the impossibility of such an action taking place. If that is how hard it is to humble oneself and receive the gospel, “Who then can be saved?” they asked. Jesus then answers in a perhaps unexpected way. He admits the impossibility of this from man’s point of you. It could never happen! Without a supernatural intervention, no one can be saved! And is this not true with every one of us? None of us would know Christ outside of His mercy, and without His plowing of our hearts! It is impossible with men!
But then Jesus gives the most encouraging and wonderful truth contained in the Holy record. He tells us that the things which are impossible with men are possible with God. Possible with God! Not impossible! All things possible! All things can happen when God is involved in the equation! If God’s power can be invoked, there are no boundaries, limits, barriers, or parameters! God can do all things! Beloved, do you believe it? Do you truly believe there is nothing He cannot do? Do you truly believe that, although it is most certainly impossible with men, it is most certainly possible with God? Oh, brethren, believe this now, and live it out in thy life day by day and step by step. Live as if the God that you serve is limitless and cannot be confined! It expands the mind and enriches the heart! It changes the spirit, and uplifts the soul! It revolutionizes the intellect and gives eternal rest to our weary hearts. It can happen! It can be done! For with God, it is possible!
“Father, we thank you for given us a truth this day that we so desperately must hear and heed. Help us no more to trust in ourselves, for we can do nothing. But Thou canst do all things! All things are possible with Thee! Increase our faith this day. We humbly pray and ask these things in Jesus’ name, Amen.”
