Matthew 6:21

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

The ultimate question of life has to do with what is valuable and important to us. Wherever you place value is where your mind and heart will be set. You will give your attention, your love, your energy, and your effort towards that end. Jesus speaks of our “treasure.” Where is your treasure? Where is your heart and mind placed? Is it on things above, or on things on the earth? Have you set your affections on things unseen and eternal, or have you set your affections on things seen and temporal? For moth and rust doth corrupt the things of this earth, and thieves break through and steal. It is pointless to set affections on anything on this earth, for it will disappear! It will only end in disappointment on the day that everything is irrevocably lost. But if we set out affections on things above, those things are enduring; those things are sure. For you see, there we have a continuing city, one that is to come. And it is not subject to the elements, the erosion, and the corruption of everything earthly.

So, my friend, we must consider today, where is our treasure? Because, as Jesus so aptly stated, there will your heart be also. Where you place your affections, your loves, and your happiness, to that will your heart be inseparably joined. Is your heart set on this earth? Oh, my friend! Tear your heart from the things of this world, because there is nothing eternal in them. They only serve to point our eyes, our minds, and our hearts away from the love and joy of Christ. Is your heart set on things above? That is a wonderful thing! For there Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. There is the throne of God, around which we will spend our eternity. There is the sea of glass, upon which our crowns will be cast before the feet of our Lord. There is our incorruptible mansion! There will our bodies be free from illness, pain, and sorrow, and we will be one with Him whom our soul loveth. Dear one, set your affections there! Place your treasure there! For if your treasure is there, your heart will be there also!

“Oh Father, we thank you for the truth that Christ has taught us about our own hearts. He knows them better than we. May our hearts be stationed on the things above, and may our eyes be fixed on the eternal abode of the Christian. May we be more concerned with our heavenly habitation than our earthly dwelling. For there we will live forever! And there we shall tabernacle with God Himself! Please, Lord, fix our eyes and our heart upon the things above, and may that be our true treasure. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
