Psalm 19:11

Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

Words would fail and time would be insufficient to tell of the value of the Word of God. But David, being inspired by God, does the best job of anyone to explain what God’s Word is in just a few verses. And the very last thing he says of the Word of God is that there is a great reward associated with the keeping of His commandments. A great reward! We can know that the benefits will be unending, and the result greatly fortuitous and favorable. In keeping of them there is great reward!

How is this so? My friend, here we have some indications that serve as descriptors of what God’s Word ought to be to us. For you see, we are told here that it is more to be desired than gold, yea, than much find gold! It is sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. All the riches of the world are less valuable than God’s eternal word. All the most sumptuous and perfectly delectable foods of this world—the most delicious of desserts, and the most exotic and flavorful sweet treats, are of much less aggregate value and pleasure than that which comes from the powerful words of Scripture.

This passage gives us the immediate benefits of life that come from His blessed Word. The law of the Lord is perfect. It converts the soul! It is sure, making wise the simple! The statutes of the Lord are the rejoicing of the heart! The fear of the Lord is clean, and endures forever. And they enlighten the eyes! Does anyone lack wisdom? Do we see only darkly through a clouded glass? Are we confused, disoriented, and dysphoric? This all can be righted one way! Through the enlightening lens of God’s everlasting covenant, His Word! And then, perhaps best of all, His judgments are true and righteous altogether! Every judgement He makes is a right judgement. Every command in God’s Word is perfectly reasonable, and not grievous. They are all righteous. Every thing He does, and every word He speaks should be attended upon with the highest regard, and the strictest adherence. Because they are all true and righteous altogether. And by them we are warned of evil, of wrong, and of the enemy. Therefore, if we will just keep His Word daily and diligently, there will be great reward! Beloved, be edified by this today, and choose to esteem His Word above all else, obeying it, following it, loving it, and keeping it. For there can be no doubt, that by this there shall be great reward!

“Father, thank you for the power of your Word. May it be more pleasant to us, and more valuable to us than the sweetest honeycomb and the largest sum of money. May we recognize the benefits and boon that come from obedience to your commandments. What blessing will come! There is a great reward, Oh Lord! And we praise you for this. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
