Psalm 119:18
Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.
The verse before us implies that an action must take place, a great transaction, a great change must needs happen in order that we may be illuminated. Our eyes must be opened! Open Thou mine eyes! What a powerful prayer this is! If we only peruse God’s Word, if I only skim the service, if I only gloss through the glorious pages of Scripture, then we will not behold wondrous things. One thing must happen. That is that the Lord must open our eyes that we may behold those wondrous things. For only the Lord can enlighten us in such a way. Only the light of God can make plain for us the beautiful and dark sayings of God’s Word and God’s truth. That illumination comes only from the Lord Himself, Who is the author of that wondrous book we call the Bible.
Wondrous things out of Thy law! Most people have never seen it! They have never viewed the Bible as being wondrous. They have never thought of the law of God as being a glorious thing, a beautiful thing, a thing that is full of wonderful surprises and invaluable gems. And yet, that is what God’s law is. It is the most wonderful thing in the entire world, for you see, in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God! Through the Word we see God. Through the Scriptures we hear from His mouth and sense His voice. How wondrous this is! What a terrible tragedy it is, and what a ludicrous mistake is made, when we miss the beauty and wonder of God’s Word. But if we do not meditate and pray through it, it is likely we will miss these gifts that are available to us. My dear friend, today, do not miss the power, beauty, and glory of His Word, but ask God this day to open your eyes, so that you may behold those wondrous, sublime, and divine things that are given to us in His holy Word.
“Father, we truly praise you for your wonderful words. Your words are words of life and beauty. They are gems invaluable and without price. They are far above the rubies of this world, and much more costly than the gold of Ophir. If only we would see it! Please, Lord, we ask you, open our eyes, illumine our minds, and enlarge our hearts, that we may behold the wonders of your Word. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
