John 3:12
If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
The general populace of this globe, and the vast numbers of the majority of this world are people who have no care for heavenly things. Indeed, they do not understand them. They can barely comprehend the things of earth. How would they ever comprehend the glorious things of Heaven? You see, Nicodemus has come to Jesus by night, and enquired more perfectly as to who Jesus was, and seemed to probe not as a skeptic but as a soon-to-be believer. He understood very little, but Christ gives him the great treatise of John 3. And what a treatise it is! What an explanation! What a glorious and heavenly essay on salvation! Ye must be born again! The Son of man must be lifted up! Whosoever believeth in Him should not perish! Our salvation is predicated on the doctrine of this chapter! Christ’s teachings are invaluable here. But all of the things that Christ has said; every word that proceeded out of His mouth when speaking to Nicodemus, yea, every word that ever came forth from His mouth were all of one category, and of one purpose. He may have used earthly things to explain His truth, and He may have met the skeptic on earth to lift him upward. But whatever He did, all His teachings and miracles were wrapped up in one great purpose—to teach the heavenly things!
Heavenly things! Yes, this is what it is all about! Heavenly things! You can have all this world! The things of this world are transient and temporary. So fleeting, they are like the weaver’s shuttle—constantly changing and soon dissipating. They are easily corrupted, and quickly destroyed. They do not last, but bend, break, and burst. They are not the heavenly things, so they are of exceedingly lesser importance. Their import only continues as long as the earth continues and the things that are therein. But this earth does not last eternally but has an end. They are only earthly things.
And now, dear friend, I would like to ask you today, where is your life centered? What is important to you today? Is it the earthly things or the heavenly things? You will be much happier with your focus on the heavenly things—the things that last forever. The things that we believe and hold onto! Place your life and emphasis on those things! Eternal life! Everlasting life! These things are wrought in God! Find encouragement in these things and derive peace from these things! May today be a day when our hearts, minds, and souls are anchored only in the heavenly things!
“Father, thank you for taking our eyes off this world, and lifting them to Heaven. And we pray that through these teachings of Christ, and through the aid of your wonderful Spirit, we shall live this day with our eyes on the things of Heaven. And we shall praise you for this. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
