Job 35:10
But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night?
There are certainly times of life, and seasons of being in which we have no song. No matter the effort effected, or the energy engendered, no melody comes. Music and song eludes us like little birds elude our presence. Song vanishes. Joy runs away. For what is song? Is it not an expression of the joy buried deep within our hearts? Have you ever seen a weeping man sing? It is a contradiction of sorts. Singing shows there is some happiness that wants to find its way out of the body and mind. It is looking for a vent, that is all.
But, is it possible to have a song “in the night?” When weeping persists and sadness insists, is it possible to exude some measure of joy? When melancholy feelings reign over the mind and heart, can a melody come to the surface amidst the gloom? Yes, no doubt! The joy and melody of God’s love can come forth in the night. My Maker giveth songs in the night! Even though the darkness around me may impend upon me, and the night be dark around me, I am still with Him! His presence never leaves! His joy is still latently present. It is only covered with the outward layers of depressive feelings and despondent moods. But this does not have to control my disposition! Unless, of course, I allow it to be so. I must instead turn my mind to my Savior. My mind will be kept in perfect peace if it is stayed on Him. You see, the abiding peace and joy is a direct gift from God Himself. The Holy Spirit maketh groanings for us which cannot be uttered, and He is the one who instills a song in the depths of our heart. Are we not commanded to speak to ourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, and to sing and make melody in our heart to the Lord? It is in the heart! It is not on the external, but on the internal! It is not the visible but the invisible, the intangible. It is the inward man. Although the outward man perishes, the inward man is renewed day by day! The Lord Himself gives this to us as we flee to Him for the renewal that comes from His Spirit.
And now, my dear brother or sister in Christ, what is the cause of your joy? Have your feelings and circumstantial surroundings been the arbiter of your peace and happiness? Let it not be so! Look to the joy that the Lord provides deep in the heart. He is the one who gives songs in the night! Are the nights long and dreary? Rest, dear one, in His joy, because He has never changed, left, or forgotten you. He is there! He is the source of joy! Thank God that He gives songs in the night!
“Dear Lord, we have needed this instruction today. May our joy be based in you, and not in any other changing, fluctuating environmental factor. It is all in you! Please fill up our joy today! And when the night comes, please Lord, give us a song then! And we shall praise you for it. For we trust you for these things. In Christ’s name, Amen.”
