Job 26:14

Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?

In response to Eliphaz and Bildad, Job gives a great parable here about the greatness of God. It is an excursus on God’s power, a treatise on His grandiose might! And what an immense portrait is painted here of God! Throughout this book, Job certainly uses imagery to help us conceive a little of the greatness of God. But, as Job here significantly confesses, these are parts of His ways. How little a portion is heard of Him? The thunder of His power who can understand? Job here is admitting that anything we know about God is minute, infinitesimal, minuscule, compared to the whole of God’s power and glory. He speaks in this chapter of the skies and the seas, of bodies terrestrial and celestial, of space, of the constellations. The crooked serpent! He tells how the Lord hangs the earth upon nothing! What an infinitely powerful God! And as if this were not enough, it is only a small part of the whole, a drop in the bucket, an immeasurably small portion of the incommensurable greatness of God Himself. We cannot fathom; we cannot perceive; we cannot cogitate upon the completeness of it. We cannot grapple with the unfathomable height, length, depth, and breadth of His wisdom, power, and might. By His spirit He hath garnished the heavens! And those “garnishes” are visible, evident, perceptible. They dot the heavens, and adorn the skies. They brighten the firmament, and beautify the vast corridors of empty space! And this was all created on the fourth day of creation, when God made the stars also! But all this is only a part, a tiny portion of the works of God. The thunder of His power who can understand?

Now, my friend, as we have just lifted our minds to a greater height of understanding, and have just deepened our knowledge of His greatness, how will this affect your heart? For you see! God is so great, we mustn’t doubt, we mustn’t fret, we mustn’t fear! He has the whole little world in the palm of His hand, indeed, the whole universe dwarfs amid the enormity of His hand. All is in His power! Why do we wonder, and why do we worry! It is a useless exercise! It is a meaningless endeavor! It is a futile attempt to control that which we never can control. Hearken! Look! See! Art Thou blind? All about thee is intricately engineered and orchestrated to work how it must work to sustain one breath! And do you think God has forgotten you? How preposterous this is! For if He had forgotten you, your breath would have vanished at once, and your being dropped instantly. By Him all things consist! Do not attempt to take something into your power that is beyond your capacity to even understand. My friend, why do we think anything at all is in our hands? For it is all held together by Him, as all the worlds have been framed by the Word of God. Now is the time for us to leave off worries, cares, and doubts. There is no place for them. No use for them. They must be eliminated at once. Our great God will handle it, if we will just leave it in His mighty hands. He has sufficient power, for all these things are only parts of His ways!

“Dear God, thank you for enlightening us this day concerning the truth of your power. We confess that we have not always recognized it. We have sometimes been more concerned about the power that we have, which is nothing in comparison. Today, we rest our souls in Thee, and sweetly recline our hearts and minds in the solace and repose of your power. All concerns, cares, and cogitations that once plagued us now can be left at Thy feet. We trust Thee! And we thank Thee that we can trust Thee for all things! In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
