Romans 5:1
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
No greater statement has ever been given. Has any more sublime comfort ever been administered by anyone anywhere in the universe? Peace with God! Naturally, we are enemies. We were at enmity with the Lord, alienated through our sin and lust. But blessed be God, through the blood of Christ’s cross, we can be reconciled to God. We, who were once enemies in our minds by wicked works, yet now hath He reconciled. In the body of His flesh through death He accomplished this for us. We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ!
Now how does this happen? It happens only through faith. We are justified by faith! Faith is the victory! Believing in Christ has conquered! We have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand! Our faith in Christ has given us salvation, for only Christ has provided the adequate means for salvation. And now that we have believed by faith, we enter into a peaceful relationship with God the Father. It is no more strained. We are no more estranged. We are no more enemies! We are no more enslaved by the Devil! We are no more strangers and foreigners, but we are fellow-citizens with the saints and of the household of God! We now have peace with God!
Why is it, beloved, that we sometimes lack the heart-peace that is needed each day? Why are we tumultuous? Why do the raging waters sometimes overwhelm our souls? Because we do not immerse our mind, body, and soul in this great peace. If we would remind ourselves of the reconciliation we have with God, the friendship that is now between us and our God, perhaps we would dwell in a state of tranquility and calmness. Serenity would envelope our souls. Earthly peace does not last. But peace with God is eternal! And the peace we have with God precedes the peace of God that passes understanding. We are told that this peace will keep our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Let us dwell in that peace today. Baptize your mind in this peace! Meditate this day, all day, upon the station that we now have in the presence of a Holy God—of the forgiveness that has been procured for us! The great love that has been showered! And the peace that now reunites the two parties that were once estranged. Peace with God! It is there! Plunge your whole self this day below the sweet and loving tide of God’s peace!
“We thank you, our dear Savior, for giving us this peace, this wonderful peace, that is flowing down from the Father above. You went through great lengths to purchase it for us. Help us dwell calmly and quietly in your precious peace this day. And it is in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that we pray, Amen.”
