Matthew 27:51

And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent.

The most wondrous story any could read, and the most monumental display of God’s miraculous love is found in the scene of the cross. The betrayal! The scourging! The crucifixion! The mocking! The derision by the Romans, and the ridicule of the people! The crown of thorns, symbolizing the rejected King! He is the King of glory! They led Him to a hill call Golgotha. What a historic place where the Son of God laid down His life! He suffered in agony, with not a drink of water to assuage his thirst, for they gave Him vinegar to drink. He hung there between two thieves who deserved their punishment. But He did not! He was there because the Gentiles, the Jews, Pilate, and all the people agreed in unison to crucify the King of kings. They did it for envy, for He took away their glory, their pomp, and their pride. He was the lowly Savior, who confronted their sin, offered salvation, and uprooted their distorted belief system. Therefore they hated Him, the One who loved the whole world, and indeed was love incarnate. And as He hung on the cross, He cried out many things. One of the last things He cried was, “It is finished.” He had completed the work of redemption. And when He “gave up the ghost,” great and powerful events instantly and simultaneously took place. The veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom! The earth did quake! The rocks rent! The whole planet trembled in that moment, and every rock on the earth was torn in the midst. What a glorious symbol this is!

The veil of the temple was rent in twain! Thus signifying that the entrance to the Holy of Holies was made available to all. The place once sequestered to only the earthly high priest was now open to all who will receive Him. There is free admission to all! If we are cleansed by the blood, we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of Him! The way is clear, open, unobstructed! The veil is rent! The curtain is torn! The barrier has been removed forever! We can speak with Him today!

Oh, my friend, will you go to the Holy of Holies this morning through the torn veil and speak with the Lord? He paved the way for you through His death. He opened the annals of Heaven so we can come boldly to the throne of grace. Come to Him today. Draw nigh with a true heart and with full assurance of faith! Come near the wondrous blood-bought mercy seat. Speak today to Him, for the way is open. Have you used it yet? Consider these words, written by Hugh Stowell, that have been of great encouragement to me:

From every stormy wind that blows,

From every swelling tide of woes,

There is a calm, a sure retreat:

‘Tis found beneath the mercy seat.

There is a place where Jesus sheds

The oil of gladness on our heads;

A place than all beside more sweet:

It is the blood-bought mercy seat.

There is a scene where spirits blend,

Where friend holds fellowship with friend;

Though sundered far, by faith they meet

Around one common mercy seat.

Ah! there on eagle wings we soar,

Where sin and sense molest no more;

And heaven comes down our souls to greet,

And glory crowns the mercy seat.

“Dear Father, thank you for this mercy seat that has been made freely accessible to us. And it is a great shame that we sometimes pass it by. May we go to it every day. Why would we not, when it is so available, so inviting, so free? Help us to come around the mercy seat, for the veil that once intervened is now forever removed. We praise Thy Holy name! May we find all our help in Thee, all the forgiveness we desire, and all the new life we need at this mercy seat. These things we pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.”
