2 Corinthians 3:5
Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God.
The best state of mind, soul, and being that any person can arrive at is the place of seeing one’s own inadequacy and insufficiency. We are not sufficient as of ourselves! We have no power, strength, wisdom, or ingenious whit to ascertain our own way. Our intellectually inept minds, and our deficient understanding does not bring us to where we need to be. There must be an outside source! There must be something greater upon which we can lean! There must be a greater thing for us! Something to give us adequacy and power; something to give us wisdom and knowledge. Because it is not in us. It is not innate, inborn, or inveterate. It is not part and parcel of our being, neither is it in the warp and woof of our souls. It is not there! It is missing! It has been sucked away from us, and we have been eviscerated of all confidence. We are creatures in need of a power source, utterly dependent on someone else.
And is this not so with every breath? Is it not said that “by Him all things consist?” And “in Him we live, and move, and have our being?” We cannot breathe without the help of Almighty God. We cannot take a step, inhale a gasp, or intake a morsel of food without the aiding of our God. We are completely and helplessly dependent on Him. Our sufficiency is of God! We cannot think anything as of ourselves! To do so would be foolhardy! For we know that we shall most surely fail. Let us never depend upon ourselves. It is a staff, that if leaned on, will pierce through the hand. It is as a broken tooth or a foot out of joint. It may endure for a time. But when the stress and strain of leaning gets the better of it, it will snap in the midst. It is fickle, frail, and fragile. Depend only on the Lord. For our sufficiency is of God!
Now I ask you, my dear friend, what is the task for which you must strive today? What is before you? What has the Lord entrusted to your care? Does your day seem daunting before you? Are you full of apprehensions about the upcoming events? Does it seem that you have no strength to accomplish the deeds you must accomplish? Lean on Him! You haven’t the sufficiency you need! Your sufficiency is of God! It is good for you to see your weakness, for it is in weakness that God’s strength is made perfect. When you are weak, then are you strong. What a marvelous truth! Then there are the everlasting arms upon which you can heavily fall. You can draw all strength from His boundless and bottomless source of power. For do you remember that you can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth you? This is the promise of His Word. Lean on Him today. Derive your confidence and sustainment from His infinite power. You are insufficient, but He is sufficient. You are inadequate, but He is adequate. You are unable, but He is able. Be reminded today, that your sufficiency is of God!
“Father, we freely admit this morning that we are powerless without you. We are surely not sufficient for all that you have called us to. We are certainly unable to obey your commands, follow your principles, and fulfill your will without your own help. We feel small and weak for the tasks ahead of us, and for the mental, physical, and spiritual strain we endure from day to day. But we praise you, Lord, that if we will just lean confidently on you, and trust implicitly on your arm, we will have the power and the sufficiency that we need. We throw ourselves fully and helplessly upon Thee. Our souls our anchored now in Thee. We thank Thy glorious name for turning our weakness into strength, and our inability into Thy ability. We praise Thy name. In Christ’s name alone we pray, Amen.”
