Job 5:9

Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number.

Our minds cannot fully conceive and our intellect cannot fully grasp nor comprehend the length and breadth and height of the works of God. Great things and unsearchable! We only know a small portion, an infinitesimal fraction of the whole. It is a drop in a bucket; it is a speck of dust. His works are great! They are unsearchable! The apostle says, “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!” See Romans 11:33. They are past finding out! What does this mean? It means that no matter how much effort we exert in the matter, or how much imagination we employ, we will never find it out! Eye hath not seen and ear hath not heard. Therefore, it is beyond our sight, our hearing, and our knowledge? So then, why do we believe that we can discern it, or calculate His workings and plans? We cannot! We may ponder them deeply. And that will be exceedingly improving on the mind. It is an immensely healthy exercise to mentally contemplate the doings of our great God. But, we must remember, it is limited and bounded by the frail faculties of our minds.

Now, dear one, do you feel at a loss and desperate to know how God is working, or the cause of what He has done? Do you desire to see the whole picture now? May I gently encourage you to move past this incomplete and futile attempt? For you may not know the cause now. You may not understand what He has done. You may not know it all until we see His face. Then we shall know even as also we are known. Now we see through a glass darkly, but then face to face. We shall know Him, for we shall see Him as He is. The crooked things shall be made straight on that day, and the rough places shall be plain. And all flesh shall see it together. That day will come! But until then, leave all the decisions, the understanding, the machinations, and the undertakings of life in the hand of our great God. Leave the reasons in His hand; leave the results up to Him. For, my dear friend, He doeth great things and unsearchable, and marvelous things without number!

“Father, we confess today that we do not understand much of your working. But we know it is great and marvelous. Help us to simply follow your leading, and trust you for the unseen, the unknown, and the unheard. May we keep our confidence in Thee all through life, knowing that you are working marvelous things without number. You have done it before. We know that Thou wilt do it again! And we praise you for it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
