John 14:1

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

What a divine word of everlasting comfort! What an injunction of eternal consolation! Let not your heart be troubled! We are all prone to be careful and troubled about many things. We are prone to allow the tide of life to sweep us with its waves. We are many times carried about from one worry to the next. But, alas! There is no need for this! For do we not believe in God? And if we believe in God, do we not also believe in Christ? Then why are we troubled? He has come to give us peace, not perpetual angst. The very purpose of Christ’s coming for us was to dwell with us for ever. Jesus said this same thing two times. For He tells us, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” See verse 27.

Therefore this is an exhortation to keep our hearts calm and at rest in Him. Let not your heart be troubled! Neither let it be afraid! Keep it from this tendency! Keep it calm! Hold it still! This must be done daily; indeed, it must be done moment by moment. We must actively keep our heart in a calm and peaceful state. This is imperative, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life.

Now, the Lord has given us many reasons for our peace, and gives us the way in which the peace may be found. For he said, “I will not leave you comfortless.” He has given us His Holy Spirit to be our Comforter, and to abide with us for ever. But, you see, this passage is full of comforting statements. Look with me! Behold with your eyes! “In my Father’s house are many mansions!” What a comfort to know that there is a place waiting for us in the skies, a tabernacle being prepared in the heavens. We have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. He is going to “prepare a place for us.” And if it were not so, he would have told us! If anything was not right; if there was any reason whatsoever that we should not be at peace, if there was any cause for concern, He would have told us! But because He hasn’t told us otherwise, all is good in the Father’s House! All is well! All is in order! It is being prepared! And every thing on this earth is also prepared for our good. All is well with us here! For He has not left us comfortless! If anything was amiss, He would have immediately informed us of the problem. But because our Savior has not indicated a reason for worry, anxiety, or care, we are not to let our heart be troubled! We believe in God! We believe also in Him! Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid!

But there are many other things that the Lord comforts us with. Time would fail to speak of them all. But let me bring one or two to your attention. For the Lord says, “I will come again.” Yes, He is coming, and He will receive us unto Himself! One day, we will be with Him for the unending age of eternity. That limitless, interminable time of utter and boundless joy. Where He is, there we may be also! Dear friend, because of this, let not your heart be troubled! Because He lives, we shall live also! We have life because He is the life! He is the way, the truth, and the life. Therefore, we have no cause for concern, because our eternal future is staked in Him. But we may mention one more. The Lord told His disciples, “If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.” Do we not have a God that hears prayer? Do we not have a Mediator that listens to our supplications? Do we not have an Intercessor in Christ? Do we not have the Spirit of God that makes groanings which cannot be uttered on our behalf? See Romans 8:26. Yes, my dear friend, we can take all things to Him. Are you troubled today? Run to the throne! Are you concerned this morning with the happenings of life? Flee to His presence! Are there hardships, trials, and difficulties? Go to the throne of grace and find grace to help in time of need. Do not bear these things alone. Bear them to Him! For we have not an High Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities. He hears us and answers us! Let us ask in His name! For He will do it! He will answer sometime! Are you weary with waiting? Believe His promise that He will come to your aid, that He will answer, and that He will do something great in His time. For you believe in God. Believe also in Christ! Let not your heart be troubled today, neither let it be afraid!

“And now, our Father, we believe in you. And we believe in your Son that was sent for us. We believe in the Comforter, which is your Holy Spirit. We know that we need not be troubled. For you have told us that you are leaving us with your peace. Not the peace the world gives, but the peace that comes from your presence, your promises, and your power. Oh help us this day to look to you! And may we not let our heart be troubled, and may we not let it be afraid! May we allow you to govern, control, guide, and calm our hearts this day. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”

As a Soldier of the Cross, I have often likened JESUS to my COMMANDER IN CHEIF. Two months ago I shared John 14 with my Bible Study group and was emphatic that the statements in the start and end of the chapter were instructions on stress management. When in tests or trials, we are to take charge and command our hearts to be still. Today’s message is indeed an affirmation of my view. JESUS Is working through each of us, and as HIS people, we are commanded to love one another. Let us therefore go forward in faith despite the stress. We have JESUS within by THE HOLY SPIRIT. All is well!

This devotion makes me think of a little chorus I heard Bro. Jack Hyles sing at Youth Conference, “Everything’s alright in my Father’s house, in my Father’s house, in my Father’s house. Everything’s alright in my Father’s house, where there’s joy, joy, joy!”
