Numbers 23:23

Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!

Samuel Morse was the inventor of Morse Code and made discoveries with electric telegraph. When he was finally able to secure a telegraph line in the United States in 1844, the first message he tapped through Morse Code was from Numbers 23:23. “What hath God wrought!” This was a powerful statement from the mouth of Balaam, as he spoke of the nation of Israel, conveying upon them the great blessing of God. Balak had tried to get him to curse God’s people, but instead Balaam spoke those wonderful words as God gave them to him.

As we meditate and ponder this phrase, let us all pause and think, what has God wrought for me? Time would fail to tell of all He has done in years past in the lives of others, what He has done in the founding of this great land, the mercy He has repeatedly given this nation, and His general goodness to all people, for He “maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.” All of these deeds are wrought in God! Everything is a blessing from His Almighty hand!

But we are often apt to miss this truth, and forget that every blessing we see is from the Lord. James tells us that “every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.” He has wrought it! He has done it! He must receive the praise and the blessing for it! What has He done for you this past year, and throughout the years of your life? The things which, at first, we thought were of no good whatsoever, were actually from the blessed Hand of Providence! He has turned many a curse into a blessing! He has filled our mouth with good things! He does wonders beyond our understanding! They are wrought in God! As we consider our past, the present, and all that is to come, let us recognize that all is from the hand of God, and say “what hath God wrought!”

“Oh Father, how we praise Thee alone for all the wonders and deeds which Thou hast wrought! May we recognize and esteem every blessing as a blessing from our wonderful God! We praise Thee for Thy Son, who is the greatest gift, and we praise Thee for every other good gift and every other perfect gift which is from above! Cause us to see that it is all from Thy hand! In Christ’s name, Amen.”
