John 1:50
Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.
In John 1, Jesus is calling His disciples. He has called Philip and then a man named Nathanael, who at first was somewhat of a skeptic about who Christ was because He had come out of Nazareth. “Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?” he enquires. But when he finally encounters the Son of God, and finds out that Jesus knew his very nature, personality, and character before they met one another, he was convinced that Jesus was “the Son of God” and “the King of Israel.” Jesus asked Nathanael a question, “Because I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou?” Nathaneel had been astounded by Christ’s knowledge of him, and immediately anchored his faith in Christ as the Son of God. But the Lord Jesus tells him, as if this is a trivial matter, that Nathanael would see “greater things than these.”
I want to ask you a question, beloved. What are the mighty works that Christ has done in your presence and in your personal experience. Let us take inventory of the previous year, from which we have just emerged. Has the Lord shown great works? No doubt! Has He manifested His goodness! Of all certainty He has!! Has He demonstrated His loving kindness, which is better than life? Yes and amen! Therefore our lips shall praise Him. But let us not think for a moment that the things He HAS done are the greatest yet. For He will show “greater works than these, that ye may marvel!” See 1 John 5:20.
Do not trust God for lesser things than what He has already done, but for greater things! And no doubt, if we will trust Him, then the things that once seemed momentous and marvelous will now seem almost ordinary as we gaze upon the powerful works which He will do in the coming days.
Dear friend, let us not content ourselves with great works, but with greater works than these!
“Heavenly Father, by Thy Holy Spirit and for Thy sake, I beseech Thee to do greater works than I have seen already. If you can give us your Son, we are positive that you can freely give us ALL things. Give us the faith to believe and the courage to expect greater things from you in the days ahead. In advance, we praise Thee, O Father, for what we are about to behold with our eyes, and hear with our ears. For it will all be to praise Thy Holy Name, and to give unto Thee the glory due unto Thy name. In the loving name of Jesus Christ our Savior we pray, Amen.”
